Re: fram filter replacement
I sent an email to tiger to get him to join up. He did a whole writeup about using a fram filter so hopefully he will see it and post.

Re: fram filter replacement
Good info...kinda scary too. Looks like the Uni is good at stopping leaves, branches and small critters.

Re: fram filter replacement
The fram filter is number - Fram CA3903. I couldn't find that particular fram part, but pep boys found a similar part from another manafacturer.
From what I remember, you cut the base off the stock filter and I glued the fram on the old base plate upside down - so the plastic ring around the top of the fram was glued to the base plate of the stock filter. Don't remember what I used for glue, silicon of some sort I think in generous amounts and it has worked well so far. I can take a picture of it at some point and post, if you're interested...

Re: fram filter replacement
Fram CA3903 seems right... If you have the filter with the plastic base just tear the filter away from the base and discard the upper portion. Clean the base with solvent and add a bead of Red RTV silicone, sit the filter onto the base and add a weight of some sorts (e.g. a book) and leave over night to set up. Install and away you go...

Re: fram filter replacement
just to be sure, we are using the filter in the correct direction, so that it is no filtering backwards right?

Re: fram filter replacement
It's just a paper element... so airflow direction really shouldn't matter /shrug

Re: fram filter replacement
it matters in this application. the pleats work much better one way than the other.

Re: fram filter replacement
Its the first problem I've heard about, with the Uni, I've been using one since 1999 and have had no problem. It is getting old though, too many cleanings.

Re: fram filter replacement
Been doing the Fram setup up for many years. When using the Fram, be sure that it doesn't interfer with the rod that runs between the vacume pot and the air box flapper. Fix is to simply bend over the filter pleats that touch the rod. No big deal at all.

Re: fram filter replacement
Probably are. The "updated" 82 carbs have a vacuum assist that goes to a kind of actuator inside the airbox - which is also part of the modification.

Re: fram filter replacement
i chose not to get the "update" i prefer the old box, i like the way it responds better, i just ride around the flat spot.
