    Carb Overflow! Empty Carb Overflow!

Post  YellowJacket Mon Jul 06, 2009 9:34 pm

Well, I rode the 7 mile ride to go visit Lucky at work and see whats up and just before I got there, YJ started missing and losing power. I nursed her into the Ace Hardware parking lot and a guy came over to me right away and said "looks like you got a stuck float". He gave me some tools and I banged the carb a couple times to loosen the float. We talked "Vision" for a while as he was a biker too and wanted to talk about my "interestng looking" bike.
Anyway, the rear carb drains like the Exxon Valdez on a bad day while the bike is running and stumbling. When the bike is off, it eventually stops. In just 14 miles, I lost almost a full tank of gas!!! I nursed it home (sounded like a model t on a bad day) and of course continued to leak. Banged the carb a bunch of times while the bike was running but it did not unstick. My guess is a bad/broken float....and I was about to give away a good one. Looks like I'm gonna spend my weekend doing a carb overhaul. At least I know its the rear carb.

Maybe I'll do the shock too since I'll have everything off the bike.

UGH...and I had been jonseing for a good ride too.

Special thanks to QBS for his tip:

"Before you tear into anything, open the drain screw and blow the hell out out your stuck float fuel line with a Turkey baster syringe filled with fuel or, my favorite, Berrymans. Try compress air if you've got it (don't get too carried away). If this works, it means that something got by your fuel filter. Investigate how this could be.

If the above fails and you have a spare carb top (Compleat with float) why not just swap out the carb tops?

VERY IMPORTANT: If you decide to swap floats, very thourghly read up on float pin removal in your Haynes. That process is NOT intuitive. Good Luck."

    It worked!

I took some pictures of the disassembly. Things are stalled at teh moment as I have my "long" week coming up at work. For those new to Visions, I have this warning about the pictures:

    Carb Splooge!
A big thank you goes out to all those who offered suggestions but the Gold Star goes to QBS for his suggestion about spraying the carb cleaner into the bowls.
Popping the top off my carbs would have probably resulted in disaster as the screws are stuck pretty tight. In addition, the drain screw is dangerously close to being kaput so I did as I mentioned above and it worked.
Not only that but it flushed out quite a bit of grimy splooge that had accumulated in the bowl (I did the front one too for good measure. I also sprayed through every accessible jet, port, pipe and hole as well as scrubbed down the outside for appearances. I also replaced a couple hoses that looked a bit weathered.
Since the leak on my YICS was an external one, I just went ahead and sealed up the outside for now with some heavy duty sealer. That’ll be a project for another day. I also held off on doing the rear shock since it looked like it was gonna be a two person job and my wife has no desire to help me on the bike.
I put the carb back in position and slid the boots onto their ports and bolted them back down. Lined up the carbs and slid them back down into the boots and tightened the rings up. Reconnected all the hoses, replaced the newly oiled UNI and airbox, put the tank back on and battened everything back down. Set it to prime and waited a few minutes. After taking a quick drink of water to rehydrate myself, I did a little gremlin exorcism dance and hit the start button. Wham! Started right up. After a few adjustments and letting her warm up a bit I decided to go for a ride. She sat happily idling on her centerstand while I geared up and right before I mounted up….bluuuurrrrrrbbbbbb-put put clunk.
Hmmmm. Sounded like she ran out of gas?! Tried to start her up and nothing. Definitely acting like she was fuel starved…which she was. I set it back on prime, and readjusted my fuel line which had a kink in it and fired her right back up. YAY! Went for a quick ride, came home and made a few more adjustments to the idle and the throttle cable and things are good again!

Heres some pics of the rest of the project:
Yep, heres the splooge that came out of the drain from my rear carb.
