batteries will "sizzle' when charging . Its usually not obvious when the bike is running or being ridden.

I"ve only fried one stator. The symptoms were, voltmeter (analog) showed reduced voltage for a few miles and then reduced to battery voltage. It was night so I couldn't disconnect the lights. I just headed home as fast as I could. I went for a short ride next day and it had fits of charging, but eventually it crapped out. I ordered an (2003) eletrex.
I've had several types of battery monitors and all have read differently. The radio shack one was the best idle voltage was 13.2 14.1 at speed. The one I have now reads 12.0 at idle and 13.8 at speed. There are probably some bad connections between the monitor and the battery, that I need to clean. My DVM reads 12.7 at idle and 14.3 at speed, reading right off of the battery.

stator of course - Page 2 Empty Replacement Stator

I think on the ROV site there is a post somewhere showing all the stators from Yamaha models and other Japanese models that will fit our bikes. I stand to be corrected, but do Yamaha Virago stators ever burn out? There seemed to be a few good ones on E Bay when I bought mine. Fitted straight in and no problems so far. Surely an "original" Yamaha part would be better than after market? May well be cheaper also.

Supposedly, the OEM replacement stators are better quality , I have seen no proof of that , so I can't say.
I'm told that eletrex stators are now made in China. I hear good things about Tim Parrott stators. Although i don't know if he will ship to NZ. We could trans ship it to you.
