Side draught carb

My carb rubbers are pretty badly perished on my XZ400 Vision. As they seem to be unobtainable I had the idea of fabricating a side draught manifold from aluminium tubing and flat plate and fitting a single CV carb off something like a 400-500cc single. Has anyone tried something like this or is it just one of those stupid ideas I should have kept to myself?

In reply to "Q"s request...Please note that most of these Visions have come into my garage in non-running order

Every Vision that I rebuild regardless of mileage, receives more or less the same "fixes"...one of these is to remove the left side engine cover for inspection of the starter clutch, main shaft/ balance shaft nuts and a visual of the stator, etc...I would advise everyone new to their Vision to perform this "fix" from the outset of putting your Vision ...

Well, I rode the 7 mile ride to go visit Lucky at work and see whats up and just before I got there, YJ started missing and losing power. I nursed her into the Ace Hardware parking lot and a guy came over to me right away and said "looks like you got a stuck float". He gave me some tools and I banged the carb a couple times to loosen the float. We talked "Vision" for a while as he was a biker too and wanted to talk about my "interestng looking" bike.

Anyway, ...

My '82 XZ smells of gasoline to a point that I'm not able to store it in the garage but instead keep it outside. My initial assumption was that the petcock was leaking through the primer opening and draining into the engine but when I set the petcock to "on" is seals tight and there is no leaking at all through the prime gas line. There are no signs of gasoline anywhere that I can see, on the engine, frame, or the cement underneath it. Any carburetor openings that I should be looking ...

The price seems reasonable enough for dual system.

Seller is Canadian, and they're always honest, right?

For those of you with horribly perished rubbers may be interested although they are rather expensive. They are listed as Seca, but appear identical to the XZ.

I have a novice question that I'm sure is answered on RoV.

I recently was able to get my Vision running. I did a fair amount of riding last fall and this spring. Yesterday was the first time that I rode this motorcycle in relatively hot weather (95 degrees F) to a party. There was little stopping, mostly freeway and 40 mph in town. After about 25 minutes of riding, the temp gauge climbed about to about 7/8 towards the red zone and stayed there. This was the first time this has happened. ...

Some gremlins have been present the last few weeks. The first I noticed some weeks ago were that the front cylinder was cut of and tacho went to zero. I stopped, restarted and thing was great for a a couple of weeks. Then I noticed that she was a little dull when cold, but that ting came back in perfect order when she got warm. Next was more front cylinder and tacho problems. I cut the yellow/black wire, and I have not seen the same kind of issue, but she now becomes problematic to start when ...

I am in the process of stripping my carbs. The gaskets are pretty well stuck on and I don't want to try and move them in case they get damaged. As far as I know I can't get replacements. Also there is a plastic part coming out of bottom of each carb that I don't know how to take out. There is a rubber tube connecting each carb fitting onto plastic parts. I am using Yamaha carb dip, the instructions say to throw whole carb in but mechanic at dealer said it will disslove the rubber. Does this extend ...
